Childish Events Cause Panic
In England in 1950 nylon stockings were unavailable in the shops but as were emigrating we were able to order them with the rule that they had to be delivered to the ship that we were leaving on. So I very happily went to our department store to order my stockings. My son Rodney aged three years six months went with me, but when the necessary papers had been filled in I found to my horror that my son was missing!

I panicked and in minutes many people were seaching for him. He was nowhere to be found. Then I saw some steps leading down to the furniture department, and although I didn’t think he could have got so far I ran down to have a quick look.

There in one of the aisles I saw Rodney having quite a conversation with a salesman. What a relief!!!
"You were a long time mum, and I liked that man," he explained.

Rodney was a very happy, easy going child, and on Saturday enjoyed playing ball with his dad. This Saturday we went shopping for some stain to touch up some floor boards. When we got home Rodney wanted to play ball with his dad, but Alf had a nasty stiff neck and wanted to rest in his armchair. So to encourage dad to play, Rodney picked up the tin of stain and threw it to him. But instead of reaching dad, it fell and burst open on our new green carpet! The walls and our precious three-piece suite which had been recently covered with cream leather were badly splashed. What a mess!!! And what urgent activity followed.

Rodney was as surprised as we were and looked very perplexed and upset. We managed to clean the walls and furniture then took the dripping carpet out onto the lawn. The cleaning company advised us to keep it saturated with turpentine, and they would collect it the following Monday.

So all was well, but it was a weekend that I shall always remember.
